Community Involvement Programme (CIP)

For many students in Singapore, CIP is a requirement in schools. Over the years, more and more students see the value of community service and the need to give back to society. With the increase in volunteerism, there are a number of Singaporeans who have set up non-profit organizations to raise the awareness of environmental issues in Singapore and the rest of the world. One such organization is the Waterways Watch Society. Since 2004, volunteers have been coming to Dunman High to give talks to Year 1 pupils to prepare them for the Geyland River Cleanup. Apart from that, we also collaborated in World Water Monitoring Day events.  Starting from the beginning of 2008, the ODAC members have also helped WWS to do water testing when they have their kayaking training at the Kallang Basin. When we needed help to collect water samples from the Kallang Basin for the members of the group who took part in the Junior Water Prize competition, they gladly brought in their speed boat. These are but some of the collaborative efforts, and this partnership would see more and better connections between volunteers at WWS and Dunman High Community.

*Geylang River Clean Up

Dunman High adopted the Geylang River in 2005. Each year, we roster our pupils to clean up the river on Mondays. For the past four years, the Year 1 students have been involved.  Some Year 4 students also helped out in 2006. While collecting the trash, the group needs to record down their data for results tabulation and trash analysis.  The trash analysis form is given by PUB and a copy is available below.  The data collected can be used for Statistics lessons in Mathematics lessons. Teachers may also consider doing some biological studies on the trash, pollution studies can also be carried out.

*NEWater Centre

The NEWater centre is a must for students to have a better understanding of how we can reclaim water. Apart from bringing our students for visits, we also encourage them to serve as NEWater Centre guides. In 2007, a group of students guided our President, Mr. Nathan‘s visit to the centre. At the centre, students can learn about reverse osmosis using memebranes, and worksheets are given to guide them in their learning. The worksheets for secondary pupils are available below.
