For the Year 1, we have an interdisciplinary project involvingMathematics and Geography. The Raingauge project was implemented since 2003.
This project is designed to engage learners to a task that is challenging, achievable and interesting. In teams of 3, students are to design and construct a rain gauge, collect rain for a short period of time and write a report of the task.
An important feature of this project is that students will be given a role that will be different from their friends in the team and together the members learn from each other and help each other to complete the task. The whole project should take about 1 month to complete.
Each year, there would be some variations such as making two raingauges and put them at two different venues to collect rainwater and made a comparison of rainwater in 2 different parts of Singapore.

In another year, the students were required to measure the acidity of the rainwater using PH paper. As the project requires good teamwork, there is also a peer evaluation on their collaboration where students will evaluate each member of their team.
The resources available for download are as follows:
For the Year 2 level, one of thelessons put up by the Geography department was to show the students athought-provoking powerpoint presentation named "Letter written in the year 2070", which tells us about a possible fate of the Earth in 60 years time - severe watershortage hascaused water to become a critical resource and life on Earth has totally changed, with the people
desperately blaming the older generations to have led Earth to such a state.
As water pollution is a topic in the Year 2 syllabus, the department hopes to instill in the students that water is an important resource and that everyone should treasure it and not waste water.
The powerpoint is available for download here:
For the Year 2, there is also a Mathematics project called "AuditingYour Water Use".
This project was originally a mathematics project with emphasis on measuring the consumption of water use by the students at home. This project was inspired by the 10 litre Challenge set up by PUB in 2006.
Below is the tasksheet for the project:
Science Investigative project also give room for water related studies.
Teo Ting Wei of Class 2L (2008) together with her group members choose a water theme for her science project.
The group on their own accord collected water samples from different bodies of water in Singapore. As student selected the topic based on their interest, they have greater ownership of the project, and would more likely to go out of their way to complete the task.
Resources provided is the task and rubrics for the science investigative project and the group report.
Water is a wonderful theme for interdisciplinary project.
The Interdisciplinary Multiple Intelligences (IDMI) Project week in Dunman High School is an important event held annually where the junior high students take a week off from school to work (in groups) on different projects tasked by teachers based on their different intelligences.
While working on the projects, students will come back to school on assigned days to meet the different teacher mentors to discuss about their project. At the end of the project week, students will return to school and present to teams of different classes and their teacher mentors where they would be graded on their project.
In 2007, one of the themes for the Year 3 IDMI projects was on ABC waters. The task given to the students is to find out how aware Singaporeans are of the ABC water programme launched by PUB in the same year. The project groups were to give suggestions for development of facilities at the different water bodies in Singapore to bring the people in the communities for recreational activities.
Some of the best projects were selected out of the many teams in the cohort and their presentations -together with the project rubrics - are available for download here:![]()
Year 4 students in Dunman High have a specific module on water in Geography.
Each year the department comes up with interesting module.
Here are 3 of the lesson packages, and the only student product is 2 project presentations on the River Study at Venus Drive in 2007. ![]()
These are the two best products and the students shared this project atthe inaugural Youth Water Conference organized by Dunman High:
